Antonio Conte reflected on a dramatic night of Champions League football after witnessing his men come within a whisker of claiming all three points before being dealt a cruel blow by a last-gasp Galatasaray equaliser.
The manager was in philosophical mood when interviewed following the final whistle at Juventus Stadium, choosing to reflect on the positives of his team’s fightback before outlining his desire to progress from the group stages.
Speaking to reporters, Conte said: “It’s a shame because we had managed to wrestle a game back in our favour that had started badly due to an individual error, which is something that can happen, then to concede an immediate equaliser is unusual. But that’s football for you.
“We put in a strong effort to overturn their opener and managed to do so. It will be a long and uphill journey, but we can’t let it dishearten us. We need to face the next Champions League games with the bit between our teeth and if we’re good then we’ll go through.”
Tonight’s opposition identified Andrea Pirlo and Leonardo Bonucci as the men that make Juventus tick, employing man markers on the Bianconeri pair to reduce their effectiveness in dictating the play.
But Conte admitted the difficulty in radically altering his team’s style of play when deprived of certain options due to injuries.
He concluded: “Changing something to catch the opposition by surprise is something that can be done during a game. But we’ve only got Pepe in the squad who would enable us to adopt a 4-3-3 system. Based on the players available, you look to go for the formation that can get the best out of them.”
