Holding the Super Cup aloft in Rome, victory in the league against Genoa and now a solid 3-1 win in Europe against Galatasaray: the Primavera really have enjoyed a week to remember.
Todays’s icing on the cake – a 3-1 win in Ivrea thanks to goals from Younes Bnuo-Marzouk, Matteo Gerbaudo and Alhassane Soumah – was the youngsters’ first three points in the UEFA Youth League, the European competition for Under 19s.
Pol Garcia Tena was captain, and led his team-mates out onto the field in front of a packed crowd at the Stadio Gino Pistoni that included Pavel Nedved and Simone Pepe.
Lining up with the same 3-5-2 formation that has proved so successful for Antonio Conte’s first team in the past two Scudetto-winning seasons, Andrea Zanchetta’s side were unable to find a breakthrough in a balanced first half.
But it didn’t stay 0-0 for long after half-time. Bnou-Marzouk put the Bianconeri ahead with just three minutes played in the second half, and Gerbaudo made it two on 65 minutes with a shot as powerful as it was precise.
Zanchetta then changed things around, bringing on Jakub Hromada and Luca Clemenza for Vajebor Sakor and Marzouk. There were now a total of three players born in 1997 on the pitch for Juve.
But the team as a whole showed remarkable maturity in closing out the win and avoiding conceding a last-gasp equaliser as they did in Copenhagen, not allowing a reply from Galatasaray’s Samet Orhan to let doubts creep into their mind and going on to seal it through Soumah’s header.
With the league championship taking a break throughout October, the Primavera will now be able to dedicate all their attentions to their next Youth League challenge: a mouthwatering double header with Real Madrid.
