Juventus captain Gigi Buffon, a safe pair of hands throughout tonight’s 4-0 win against Lazio in the Italian Super Cup, described how his team had added weight to Antonio Conte’s belief that results in friendly matches are no real indication of a side’s strength when he spoke to the press at the Stadio Olimpico.
The 35-year-old said: “The great sides and great players step up to the plate when the matches count for something and when the stakes are high.”
He also made it clear that tonight’s win was particularly special for him and his team-mates because it took place on Italian soil: “It’s the first one-game trophy that we’ve been able to celebrate with our fans, because the Super Cup that we won last year was held in China. It’s a wonderful experience for us.”
Buffon concluded by highlighting the great contribution of his manager Antonio Conte, saying: “He’s an important factor for us, but everyone knows that by now. The praise should not just go to us, because he is responsible for our success in a big way.”
