Supporters hadn’t seen him since October’s pulsating 3-2 victory over Roma at Juventus Stadium but Martin Caceres was back in the thick of the action during a typically heroic performance among the Bianconeri rearguard this evening.

The Uruguayan made his return to the pitch in style as he chipped in with the second goal in tonight’s excellent 3-1 success at the San Paolo – his first strike since netting against Napoli in Turin back in October 2012.

Speaking to Sky pitchside following tonight’s encounter, the 27-year-old began: “I’m happy on a personal level but also for the team, because tonight served as a pivotal victory. It’s been difficult for me because I’d never had such a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

“It was a shame that we couldn’t hold our advantage but they’re a strong side and it was a tough game. Luckily we were able to retake the lead and go on to win.”

Before going on to celebrate Juventus’ victory with the rest of his team-mates in the dressing room, Caceres concluded: “It was a difficult game, as are the rest of them and we need to approach the remaining encounters as if they were all finals.”
