Yet another landmark ticked off for Gianluigi Buffon in a now peerless Bianconero career as, not long after the break in tonight’s 0-0 draw with Borussia Monchengladbach, Juve’s long-serving skipper surpassed Alessandro Del Piero’s record for minutes played in a Juventus shirt.

Of the 48,839 minutes spent between the sticks for the club, few will have been as trouble-free as this one for Gigi as visitors Gladbach rarely threatened in a game dominated by the home side.

Reflecting on Wednesday’s stalemate, despite being largely untested over the 90 minutes, the 37-year old keeper acknowledged a draw was a fair result on his record-breaking evening as he spoke to Mediaset Premium immediately after the final whistle.

He began: “I think it was a fair result even though, on balance, we deserved to win. That said, we didn’t make many clear-cut opportunities to score. We dominated the game territorially and we looked to attack far more than Borussia but in the end they deserved the point just as much as we did.”

As for his feat in surpassing Del Piero, Buffon, ever the professional, concluded proceedings by deflecting attention away from his achievements to his team-mates, fans and the club as a whole.

“Undoubtedly it’s a great feeling (to beat Del Piero’s record) but the most satisfying thing about football is sharing your victories as a squad, whether it’s with your team-mates, the backroom staff, the fans or the club as a whole.”
