Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen played out a goalless draw on Saturday evening at the BayArena, a result which sees Pep Guardiola’s men stay eight points clear of second-placed Borussia Dortmund at the top of the Bundesliga table.

Following a first half lacking in incident, Bayern stepped up their efforts for a winner after the break, with Robert Lewandowski and Thomas Muller twice coming close to opening the scoring.

In the 84th minute, the visitors were dealt a serious blow when Xabi Alonso received his marching orders following two mistimed tackles in quick succession.

Attempting to exploit their numerical advantage late on, the hosts fashioned their best chance of the match when Julian Brandt saw his close-range shot sail whiskers wide.

Despite dropping two points on the night, Guardiola and company remain comfortably in pole position at the Bundesliga’s pinnacle, after Dortmund could only manage a 0-0 draw with third-placed Hertha Berlin.
