Juve march on against Verona

One goal, a strike on the hour from Moise Kean, was enough for Juventus to collect a fifth straight win in Serie A and climb into the top four in the league table.

Hellas Verona proved no pushovers despite their lowly standing but all three points head back to Turin with the Bianconeri after a hard-fought contest at the Bentegodi.

THE MATCH

Juventus came up against a Verona side determined to climb off the foot of the table. The hosts pressed intensely in the centre of the park, leaving the Bianconeri little time or space to build play.

In fact, neither goalkeeper was seriously tested in the opening period. On 16 minutes, birthday boy Mattia Perina held a dipping drive from Kevin Lasagna. Two minutes later Danilo was called on to make one of his trademark challenges in the area to deny Milan Đurić a shooting chance.

Juve’s first effort on goal came through Arek Milik, who controlled well at the edge of the area but his effort was straight at Lorenzo Montipò. The Verona keeper was called on again from another shot from outside the box, this time from Manuel Locatelli, which Montipò touched out wide.

From the corner, the deep cross picked out Bremer. However, the defender’s volley sailed over the crossbar.

As in the first half, also in the second Verona started strongly but Juve stood strong, denying Pawel Dawidowicz with solid defending. And as in the first half, the Bianconeri emerged as the match progressed.

On 58’ Adrien Rabiot found space in the opposition area but his cross was played too far ahead of Moise Kean. The two linked up again two minutes later for the game’s only goal.

Milik started the move in the centre of the park with an incisive pass to Rabiot. The Frenchman did likewise for Kean, who raced into the area and finished off the move for his second goal of the campaign.

Verona responded but were kept at a safe distance and the closest the home side came to a possible equaliser was when, with five minutes remaining, the referee awarded a penalty against Leonardo Bonucci. However, after studying the evidence via VAR, the match official overturned his initial decision -  the Juve captain had arrived first to the ball, ahead of Simone Verdi.

In stoppage time, Alex Sandro was sent off for a last-man tackle on Lasagna, but even down to 10 players, Juventus saw out the remaining minutes to collect a fifth straight success, all without conceding a goal, and climbed into the top four.
