#OnThisDay in 2002: Del Piero double downs Parma

The season’s annual curtain-raiser between Juventus and Parma in August 2002 saw the Bianconeri take home their third Italian Super Cup as they defeated the Crociati 2-1 in Tripoli, Libya.

Fan favourite Alessandro Del Piero scored either side of Marco Di Vaio’s momentary equaliser to ensure the reigning champions overcame the Coppa Italia holders in a closely fought encounter.

Marcello Lippi’s men would go on to use the triumph as a springboard to a successful season in which they won their 27th league title and finished runners-up in the Champions League.
