Rewind | Goalscoring defenders in Juve-Verona

The last goal "made in Italy" in Juventus-Verona was scored by Moise Kean, in the most recent edition of this fixture. But we have to go back to 2018, to May 19th of that year, to find another Italian goalscorer in this encounter.

The scorer that day was Daniele Rugani - who also starred in the last round of the championship on 22 October at San Siro – and a very special day it was, as Juventus celebrated Scudetto number 36. It was 0-0, the second half had just begun as Douglas Costa ran down the right and shot goalwards, his effort parried by the keeper, with Rugani on hand for the tap-in to make it 1-0. A few minutes later Pjanic doubled the lead, securing the result as the celebrations began at the final whistle.

History tells of many other goals from the defense in matches against Verona. Let's explore some of them.

SERGIO PORRINI

One of the most memorable Juventus-Verona matches was that of 15 December 1996 when, at the Delle Alpi Stadium, the Bianconeri found themselves two goals down, but managed to turn the game around thanks to a super performance from Alessandro Del Piero. The winning goal was one of Pinturicchio's most beautiful brushstrokes. Here he is seen embraced by, among others, Sergio Porrini, who scored Juve's first goal to mount the comeback.

ANTONIO CABRINI

A Juventus-Verona moment from 1986-87, in a decade in which the two teams competed at the highest levels. In the photo you can see Antonio Cabrini near the Verona. Three minutes time, it was his free-kick that secured the three points following goals from Preben Elkjaer and Lionello Manfredonia.

BONUS: SANDRO SALVADORE

Juventus had never lost at home to Verona. This streak continued thanks to the exploits of Sandro Salvadore, who was given free license to roam forward in the final minutes of their encounter in the 1972-73 season. With just five minutes to go, the Bianconeri were a goal down when Juve's number 6 appeared in the area and deflected a ball headed by Pietro Anastasi past Franco Superchi to score.
