15 January/5 February 1997, Paris/Palermo, Juventus 9-2 Paris Saint-Germain (on aggregate).
After edging out Ajax in a Champions League final penalty shootout, Juventus then locked horns with Cup Winners’ Cup holders Paris Saint-Germain over two legs contested in early 1997.
The Bianconeri put on a commanding display in the French capital and had one hand firmly on the trophy following their 1-6 victory which featured goals from Porrini, Ferrara, Lombardo, Amoruso and a double from Padovano.
The return leg three weeks later was little more than a formality and Juve ensured there was to be no dramatic turnaround by emerging 3-1 winners thanks to a Del Piero double and Vieri’s strike right at the death.
This latest addition to the glittering Juventus trophy cabinet capped off a historic 12-month period for the club which saw them achieve four major pieces of silverware: Italian Super Cup, Champions League, Intercontinental Cup and UEFA Super Cup.
Juventus starting XI – Peruzzi; Torricelli, Ferrara, Porrini/Montero, Pessotto; Deschamps/Jugovic, Di Livio, Zidane, Tacchinardi; Padovano, Del Piero.
