Juventus Women First Team’s extraordinary season came to an end in the best possible way. After winning the Scudetto, today the team lifted the Women’s Coppa Italia in the last match of the season as, thanks to a perfect first half performance, the Bianconere defeated Roma 4-0 in the final.
Let's review the pivotal moments of the match and hear from some of the key players and coach Massimiliano Canzi, as well as taking a look at the team sheets.
THE MATCH REPORT
The perfect weather for a big crowd at the ‘Giuseppe Sinigaglia’ stadium in Como, which played host to the final of the Women's Coppa Italia, in a match which the Bianconere started brightly and managed to take an early lead. First Barbara Bonansea did well to win a free-kick in the final third, before an excellent pass caught the Giallorosse defence off guard and found Cristiana Girelli: Camelia Ceasar came rushing out to meet her and bundled over the attacker.
The challenge was punished with the award of a penalty kick for Juventus Women: Girelli made no mistake from 12 yards and scored goal number 20 of her season.
Roma tried to respond immediately, but Valentina Giacinti's volley in the 15th minute from inside the area flew high over the crossbar. Barely five minutes had passed before the Bianconere struck again: in the 21st minute, a loose pass from the Giallorosse led to Sofia Cantore recovering possession and finding herself one-on one with Ceasar. The Juventus Women number 9 kept her composure and finished with a low strike to make it 2-0.
A quickfire double that put the game firmly in the hands of the Italian champions, who scored their third on the half-hour mark: a deep pass aimed at Girelli was cleared, but only as far as Lindsey Thomas who finished from the edge of the area; with her effort taking a deflection on its way to goal that wrongfooted Ceasar, who was forced to pick the ball out of the back of her own net for a third time in 30 minutes .
Juve weren’t finished there. Not by a long shot, as the Bianconere continued to put in the best first half performance of the season: Lisa Boattin delivered a perfect cross onto the head of Girelli in the 35th minute, who guided her effort brilliantly inside the far post, thus getting her second of the day and putting Juventus Women out of sight. Pauline Peyraud-Magnin was then called into action on a couple of occasions in the final minutes of the half to prevent Roma from spoiling the result of a perfectly played half: at half-time it was 4-0, with coach Canzi’s side in full control of the match.
The second half was played as more a showcase with the result beyond doubt, as the Bianconere retained their 4-0 lead. In the 55th minute Cantore showed quick thinking to get free and deliver a cross onto the head of Bonansea, who was unable to find the target from an excellent position, while coach Canzi then began to give some minutes to the girls on the bench.
In the end the result, and above all the reward, of a match dominated from the first whistle remained unchanged: a perfect victory, well deserved. Well done girls, you couldn't have ended the season in a better way!
MASSIMILIANO CANZI
“Winning this Coppa Italia is a dream, the crowning achievement of a wonderful season, which surpassed all expectations. The girls have been wonderful and the club has provided us with great players: today's victory was the icing on the cake, we are overjoyed. It was a performance that reflected the extraordinary work done by everyone, on the pitch and by those who manage this group. I couldn't really ask for more in my first season as Juventus Women coach. Sara Gama was honoured from a sporting and human point of view in the best possible way, by ending with a victory: we won this trophy thanks to a dominant performance. We built a system of play that would bring out the best characteristics of these players: playing direct and being able to make the most of their qualities. I am a different person professionally and as a human after this experience, I told the girls before the kick-off: after a 40-year career, I didn't think it was possible.”
SOFIA CANTORE
“It is the icing on the cake at the end of a beautiful season. It is the triumph of the group, of the strength of our dressing room that has really made the difference this year. [Sara] Gama is irreplaceable, we are happy to have paid homage to her with these two trophies and I think it was a sweeter farewell to football this way.”
LINDSEY THOMAS
“It has been a tough season, with several changes. We knew it was going to be a tough game today and we put everything we had into bringing home this trophy as well. For me personally it was a season with a lot of sacrifices, the goal that hadn't come for me so far this season came today in the final and it's beautiful.”
SARA GAMA
“I don't know what to say... Today was indescribable, I am overjoyed and even more proud of this team. To this group I leave the spirit and the will to win, to always push yourself to the maximum and give everything you always have, even when you don't feel like you can. That's what counts, the desire to always go the extra mile, constantly. I will miss all this so much, especially the teammates, the fact of sharing moments, maybe even more than football itself. Anyone who plays football knows that, those are the things I will miss straight away.”
