The Juventus Men’s First Team continued their recent good European form with a third consecutive Champions League win, beating Benfica 2-0 in Turin on Matchday 7 of the League Phase.
Both goals came from midfield on the night, with Weston McKennie adding the second after Khephren Thuram had opened the scoring.
THE MATCH REPORT
In front of an Allianz Stadium painted black and white, Luciano Spalletti’s side started with serious intent from the very first whistle. Kenan Yildiz was the driving force of the side early on, and the first efforts were the No.10’s, though he was unable to find the opening goal despite a couple of efforts.
Michele Di Gregorio had to be at his alert best to deny Heorhiy Sudakov at the other end, with Lloyd Kelly helping to sweep up after.
But in attack the Bianconeri kept knocking. Fabio Miretti went close next with a headed effort, and Jonathan David looked to threaten as well. But Benfica’s goal remained untouched at the break.
The visitors started aggressively in the second half, but the Bianconeri came right back at them and got ahead before long through Khephren Thuram. An exchange between Thuram and David ended with the Frenchman carrying the ball into the area, shifting onto his right foot and placing it into the bottom corner.
That lead was soon doubled through Weston McKennie. David was again involved, acting as a wall for Wes to bounce a one-two off, and the American made no mistake when put through, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way with his finish.
Benfica were awarded a penalty after VAR intervention with about ten minutes to play, but Vangelis Pavlidis wasn’t able to capitalise and Di Gregorio’s clean sheet remained intact, and the three points were safe.
