Boasting exactly a century of history, it comes as no surprise that Juventus-Bologna has had many stand-out moments. One such moment is caught in the background photo. The year is 1981 and a sixteen-year-old Roberto Mancini in his debut Serie A campaign is being closely monitored by Domenico Marocchino and Antonio Cabrini. In the match day 13 fixture it was defender Cabrini that turned the tables on the young striker by doubling Juve’s advantage and completing the scoring in the 2-0 victory.
CHART TOPPERS
Considering only post-war era Juventus-Bologna meetings in Turin, Filippo Inzaghi and John Charles share the crown as the fixtures top scorer. Both forwards struck six goals against the Felsinei while donning the black and white stripes. For Inzaghi, the high point was a hat-trick in 1998, which gave Juve arithmetical certainty that the league title was theirs.
The photo instead refers to the match that was played the following year, when the two teams played out a 2-2 draw. Super Pippo, of course on the scoresheet, is being tackled by future Juventino, Michele Paramatti.
TWO TIMES ANASTASI
Roberto Bettega in the foreground and Pietro Anastasi in the background push on in a Juventus attack against Bologna. It was the latter who decided this 1972-73 match with a brace. With Juve putting together an unbeaten run in pursuit of leaders Milan, the contest always appeared out of the visitors’ reach, more so following the forced substitution in goal after just 15 minutes of play, when Amos Adani replaced then-first choice keeper Pietro Battara.
MIDDLE MEN
Juventus-Bologna has not only been decided by the striker’s instinct - also midfielders have weighed in with an important contribution. One example was last season, when Arthur broke the deadlock, and Weston McKennie added a second with a header from a Juan Cuadrado corner.
BLAZING START
Another Juventus-Bologna that ended 2-0 arrived in season 2018-19. Bologna did not know what had hit them thanks to Juve’s blistering start driven by Blaise Matuidi. The midfielder played a key role in the move that led to Paulo Dybala’s opening goal on 12'. Matuidi then fired a remarkable shot in under the crossbar to effectively end the contest a mere 17 minutes after kick off.
GRANDSTAND FINALE
A much more hard-fought victory was that of season 2012-13. The decisive player was again a midfielder and again a France international, but this time he went by the name of Paul Pogba, whose header in the second minute of stoppage time clinched all three points. On entering time added on, with the game was perfectly balanced at 1-1 following goals from Fabio Quagliarella and Saphir Taider, the Juve motto 'fino alla fine' held true once more.
