An extra-time brace from Remina Chiba secured a 3-1 win for the Women’s First Team against Hammarby in Biella.
The win sees the Bianconere through to the third qualifying round of the UEFA Women’s Champions League as the champions of the mini-tournament.
THE FIRST HALF
The Swedes got off to a flying start and, after just two minutes, Svea Rehnberg went close, only to be denied by Danielle De Jong. The visitors maintained the upper hand in the opening stages, but as the minutes ticked by, Juventus began to take greater control of possession.
In the 22nd minute, Juventus had their first attempt through Estela Carbonell, whose shot went wide. Six minutes later, however, it was Hammarby who broke the deadlock: Rehnberg was on hand in the box and scored from close range to make it 0–1.
Juventus responded, and in the 33rd minute, Alba Redondo went in search of an equaliser, only to be denied by Bella Andersson. In the 38th minute, Emma Stolen Godo tried her luck with a header. Barely a minute later, the score was 1–1: following a sustained attack in the Swedish box, Redondo was quickest to pounce on the ball and beat Andersson.
Towards the end of the half, the Bianconere came close to taking the lead. In the 43rd minute, a cross from Tatiana Pinto took a tricky trajectory and crashed against the crossbar, whilst in stoppage time, Cecilia Salvai had a shot following a set-piece from a corner, only for it to be deflected, allowing Andersson to make the save.
A BALANCED HALF
Juventus came out for the second half with greater aggression and, in the 49th minute, Annamaria Serturini tried her luck with a long-range shot, but failed to hit the target. The match remained evenly balanced, but it was Isaac Guerrero’s side who created the best chances in the closing stages.
In the 78th minute, Stolen Godo came close to putting his side ahead with a header that went just wide. In the 85th minute, Remina Chiba caused havoc in the Hammarby defence with a brilliant burst of speed, whilst in the 89th minute, Barbara Bonansea came very close to making it 2–1 with a left-footed shot that grazed the post.
The last big chance of normal time came in stoppage time: Carbonell found herself one-on-one with Andersson, but her shot went wide. After ninety minutes, the score remained 1–1 and the final went into extra time.
CHIBA DECIDES THE FINAL
In extra time, it took Juventus just three minutes to score the goal that sealed the match. In the 93rd minute, Chiba went it alone and unleashed a powerful left-footed shot that left Andersson with no chance.
With just one minute to go before the teams switched ends, it was the Japanese player again who met a cross from the left to effectively seal qualification. In the second half of extra time, the Bianconere held firm against the Swedish side’s attempts and secured a crucial victory, ensuring their European campaign continues.
