Juventus Women kicked off their Trophée Veolia campaign with a 2-1 win against Montpellier at Groupama Stadium on Thursday afternoon.

GAMA BACKHEEL

The opening half an hour of the game saw an equal performance between the two sides, with neither team testing the opposition goalkeeper. Lundorf pulled off an excellent challenge to break up Montpellier’s attack towards goal, while Girelli’s volley from Maria Alves’ cross was deflected narrowly wide of the post. The Bianconere did break the deadlock on the brink of half time when the ball fell perfectly to her and she backheeled it into the box.

STASKOVA SOLO EFFORT

Rita Guarino’s started the second half by immediately threatening at goal with a strike from distance that forced the opposition keeper to tip it over. Sembrant thought she had got the goal to double the lead when a goalline scramble saw her toe-poke it over the line, only for it to be ruled out for offside. Juve did make it 2-0 through Staskova, who rounded her marker and fired the ball into the back of the net to complete a great solo effort. Montpellier pulled a goal back through Dekker in the 69th minute after Giuliani’s initial save rattled the crossbar and fell to the feet of the opposition player. Montpellier went in search of a late equalizer, and they were denied by Giuliani with eight minutes to go after she tipped the ball over the crossbar from a dipping free-kick to ensure the victory went to Bianconere.
