It was a true centre forward's goal: bringing the ball down in the box, shielding it from his marker and firing home on the turn. It was a goal that gave Juve a 3-0 lead against Cagliari as they ended their 2014 Serie A commitments with three big points. It was also his fourth goal in three outings against the Sardinian outfit, who - much to their chagrin - have become one of his favourite victims in Italy.

After the game, and before boarding a flight to Qatar with the rest of the team, Fernando Llorente stopped to discuss the Bianconeri's latest triumph in a calendar year that has yielded the tidy sum of 95 points.

"I'm happy with the result because the three points were crucial for us to maintain top spot. The main thing is that you keep winning games and doing your bit for the team. Sometimes you get on the score sheet, sometimes you don't: it all comes with being a striker," our Spanish delantero declared.

He then took the opportunity to lavish some praise on his friend, team-mate and fellow goalscorer Arturo Vidal. "Arturo played magnificently tonight and scored a top-class goal. His game has picked up again now too. He's a key player for us."

Next up are Napoli in Doha and a chance to claim the first piece of silverware this season. The 29-year-old went on: "It's a decisive match and it's going to be extremely tough. Napoli are a great team. Anything can happen and we have to be on top of our game because we want to win and reaffirm just how good we are."

After winning a Scudetto in his first season in Italy, what hopes does Llorente have for 2015? "I couldn't ask for anything more. We've been magnificent. Now we just have to try and keep it up."

Arturo Vidal then stepped up to the cameras - a man who will climb aboard the plane to Qatar bang on form after scoring a peach of a goal tonight: a beautifully struck, perfectly placed shot from outside the area that left Cagliari keeper Cragno with no chance.

Reflecting on the match, he said: "All that mattered tonight was winning this difficult game against a very good team. It puts us in good stead. Now we must switch our attentions to Napoli, make sure we end the year on a high and get off to a strong start in 2015."

Asked to comment on his form, he replied: "I did go through a tough spell but I'm getting back to my best again now. I want to push on and do even better in 2015, especially for all the people who have given me their support."
