Everything is set for the Women’s First Team's opening Serie A Women’s Cup match, which they will play away against Como 1907 at the Giuseppe Sinigaglia stadium at 18:00 on Friday, August 21.
Coach Isaac Guerrero’s spoke ahead of this important fixture against the Lombardy side.
IMPROVING FITNESS WHILE PLAYING TO WIN
"The team looks good to me, in good shape. We’re working hard every day and, step by step, our fitness is improving. They’re brave girls, with great talent, who are keen to give it their all and put themselves to the test every day, both on the pitch and in training. It’s been a slightly different pre-season to usual because we’ve faced major challenges right from the start, but so far we’ve managed to balance demanding fixtures and crucial matches we need to win with the team’s development. And this week, too, we’ve continued along this path. We’ve been together since 7 July, so it’s still too early to judge our progress in terms of our playing standard: as the coaching staff, we’re trying to facilitate the development and natural inclinations of the players who take to the pitch. They have certainly understood what we’re asking of them and are putting it into practice; they’re ambitious players who want to take centre stage. They have the ambition to achieve something that goes beyond the ordinary, beyond the basics, and they’re already tackling sections D, E and F…and we hope to reach Z before long.”
THE IMPORTANCE OF THE YOUTH ACADEMY AND YOUNG TALENT
"From my point of view, the First Team is the tip of the iceberg in a much broader, systematic development pathway that starts with the youth academy: the foundation here at Juventus Women is truly important. This club has a very clear vision of this pathway, and I, too, personally believe strongly in it. We are nurturing the talent of our players from the grassroots right through to the top. The team boasts talent in many young players – girls who have come through the Primavera or others who have already gained some experience in Serie A, as in the case of [Federica] D’Auria, who is nonetheless a product of the Juventus youth system. I’m very pleased with the work D’Auria has done, just as I am with the other 24–25 players we have in the squad. This makes me feel very positive and confident when I look to the future: when you have young talent at your disposal, it means you have the opportunity to build.”
THE MATCH AGAINST COMO 1907 IN THE SERIE A WOMEN’S CUP
“We’re approaching this competition with great enthusiasm: there’s a title up for grabs, and the girls who won it last season will do everything they can to defend their title and win it again. We want to defend this trophy, making the most of this opportunity without letting the demands of playing every four days – between the Serie A Women’s Cup and the UEFA Women’s Champions League qualifiers – weigh us down. In total, we’ll play five matches in 17 days, essentially one every four days. The girls are ready, we have a top-class squad, everyone is fully committed, and I’m very confident. Como are a strong side who have strengthened considerably; although newly promoted, they’re already looking like a top-flight club. We’re very pleased to be facing a team like this, as it gives us the chance to take to the pitch at a major stadium like the one we’ll be playing at tomorrow. It’s a wonderful experience for all the players, from the youngest to the most experienced.”
