JUVENTUS WOMEN RETURN TO WINNING WAYS IN SERIE A AGAINST POMIGLIANO

After victory in midweek that saw Juventus Women qualify for the group stages of the Champions League, the Bianconere returned to league duty. Against Pomigliano, Pauline Peyraud-Magnin was rested at one end, while at the other Cristiana Girelli was sidelined because of injury as Joe Montemurro freshened up his side.

Three goals - all in the second half - without reply restored that winning feeling also in Serie A for the Bianconere as they rounded off the week in style.

THE MATCH

The opening half an hour was a case of Juventus taking measure of their opponents, who had come to Vinovo to make life difficult.

Breaking Pomigliano down was no easy task. The first chance fell to Sofia Cantore, whose snap shot at the edge of the area was parried by the Pomigliano goalkeeper on 31’. Seven minutes later Martina Lenzini floated in an inviting cross, which just eluded Lineth Beerensteyn. The ball reached Agnese Bonfantini at the far post but her shot was blocked by the visiting defence.

At half time it was evident that a change of pace was needed to break down the opponents' determined defence.

It was Beerensteyn that led the way as the Netherlands international stepped up a gear. First a flash of skill freed her from the close marking but her shot went just wide. Almost immediately again the winger had another attempt on goal. This time the shot was spilled by Cetinja in the Pomigliano goal. Cantore pounced on the rebound but her effort was disallowed for offside.

The striker didn’t have to wait long before she could celebrate though - only after the visitors had been reduced to 10 following the second yellow card for Di Giammarino.

Just before the hour mark, a cross from Nilden on the left was met on the run by Cantore, who bulleted her header in at the near post. A second goal in a few days for the striker, who had also just celebrated her birthday, to make it a week to remember.

A minute later Nilden from distance hit the top of the crossbar as Juve looked to put daylight between themselves and their opponents.

The second goal eventually arrived, with less than 10 minutes remaining. Cantore set off on the left. She laid the ball off to Evelina Duljan, who did likewise to Arianna Caruso, who unleashed an unstoppable effort that sailed beyond Cetinja into the back of the net.

Not satisfied, in the closing seconds of the game, Juventus added a third. Again Duljan delivered the assist for Annahita Zamanian, who tapped home from close range.

Three well-earned points wrapped up an important period for Juventus Women, who now head off on international duty, but the players wherever they are will be tuned in tomorrow to keep track of what the Champions League draw has in store for them.
