The Women’s First Team are through to the final of the UWCL Mini Tournament, beating Torreense 2-1 in Biella. They will face Hammarby in the final.
Goals came from Estela Carbonell and Ana Capeta, with the Portuguese side scoring late on to apply some pressure to the Bianconere. Coach Isaac Guerrero and Annamaria Serturini spoke to the press after the match.
ISAAC GUERRERO
“I’m pleased with the team’s overall performance; we tried to play our game right from the start. It goes without saying that, as we’ve said more than once, our aim is always to impose our style of play. Sometimes we manage to do that, sometimes we don’t – as in the first half of the match, when we struggled to keep possession because we needed to be calmer. But that’s the nature of the sport. I’m pleased with the effort shown by the squad, but obviously we need to keep making progress. We’ve been together for less than a month, so this match will help us get some answers and understand what we need to improve on. We watched the match this afternoon: in the final we’ll face different opponents, and we’ll have time tomorrow to assess the situation. And yes, we’re probably in for a tough match, we’re talking about a top-class team from Sweden, who’ve done well in Europe, and it’ll be an exciting encounter.”
ANNAMARIA SERTURINI
“Making my Champions League debut is incredibly exciting, especially 10 months after my injury, and I was really keen to play in this match; I wanted to help the team. The important thing today was the win, we’ll try to iron out the areas where we made the most mistakes ahead of Saturday’s match, but as a first test it was excellent. I’ve worked really hard to be here today in this condition; I sacrificed my holidays to be able to help the team and make a difference right from these first few matches, so that’s definitely what I’ve wanted ever since the day I found out I was injured. There’s still a long way to go and there’s no time to celebrate now.
"We were in control for the full 90 minutes; of course, the way we play, very attacking, means we take a few risks, but we were definitely the better side throughout the match. We’ve got a big match coming up on Saturday against a tough side, but our mindset is to attack, not to sit back, and to always be proactive – and today we showed that. Obviously, there are risks involved with this style of play, but that’s fine: the important thing is to entertain the fans and win.”
