Gaetano Scirea was an example for all both on and off the field. The elegant defender, who wore the black and white stripes between 1974 and 1988, won trophies and admirers aplenty with his style of play and impeccable sportsmanship.
In the colours of Juventus, Scirea helped the club to 14 especially successful years, lifting seven league titles, two Coppa Italia trophies, one European Cup, one Intercontinental Cup, one European Super Cup, one Cup Winners’ Cup and one UEFA Cup. He added to this glittering haul by forming part of Italy’s famous World Cup winning squad in 1982.
He would have turned 63 today, had a tragic car accident in Poland not cruelly taken him away from us. The memories of his style and grace, however, will remain etched in our hearts and minds forever.
