With the Bianconeri overturning Chievo 1-0 for the third time on a Serie A opening day, Gianluigi Buffon was pleased with the final outcome at the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi tonight.

In a match where the Old Lady were firmly on top throughout, the 36-year-old pulled off an incredible save from Maxi Lopez to ensure a fully deserved three points came back to Turin.

In his post-match interview with Sky Italia, Buffon expressed his belief that the Bianconeri will gain further sharpness as the season progresses: “It was a good match, full of chances, some which were squandered and some which were down to bad luck.

“But that's all part and parcel of the opening day of the season, when you're not yet at peak physical condition.”

The Italian international then went on to praise his team-mates’ overall performances: “The desire to win is there, we prepared well for the game and showed good spirit out there.”

Ahead of the two-week international break, Buffon was adamant that consistency is key to ensuring continuing success: “We perhaps might have deserved to triumph by a greater scoreline, but the challenge now is maintaining that desire in other league games. The difference between the pretenders and those who want to win all comes down to consistency.”

With the Bianconeri looking to win a fourth consecutive Serie A title, Buffon concluded his interview by assessing his side’s competitors for the season ahead: “Roma are a well-drilled outfit and a great side but Napoli are also contenders, as are Fiorentina and Mazzarri’s Inter.”
