The Bianconeri’s Champions League Group A rivals Olympiacos were also among the goals yesterday, firing five past struggling Panthrakikos to send the home fans away from the Karaiskakis Stadium with plenty to smile about.

Alejandro Dominguez, Thanasis Papageorgiou, Tasos Avlonitis, Dimitris Diamantakos and Konstantinos Mitroglou were on target in a win which took the reigning Greek champions to within two points of current leaders PAOK, who slipped to a 2-1 home defeat against Olympiacos’ historic rivals Panathinaikos.

Over in Spain, Atletico Madrid stumbled to a shock 2-1 defeat against managerless Real Sociedad in San Sebastian.

Top scorer Mario Mandzukic hit an early opener but the visitors, looking to pick up their fourth straight league victory, were brought back down to earth by goals from Carlos Vela and Imanol Agirretxe.

The result leaves Diego Simeone’s men ruing the missed opportunity to catch up on the three rivals ahead of them in La Liga: Valencia, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Atletico currently lie four points adrift of Los Blancos, who remain out in front following a 5-1 home demolition of Rayo Vallecano.
