“The only person I’m listening to at the moment is the coach (Massimiliano Allegri). I’m focusing only on putting his suggestions into practice and giving 100 per cent for the team.”

These were the words of Paul Pogba as Juventus drew a blank for the first time this season in Europe, sharing the spoils with Borussia Monchengladbach in this evening’s goalless stalemate.

While underlining the influence of boss Massimiliano Allegri, the Frenchman went on to add that regardless of the number on the back of his shirt, he is still the same player he has always been.

“The number ten shirt doesn’t scare me. If I had scored tonight then there would be no discussion about it. The only thing that matters is what happens on the pitch, the rest is irrelevant.”

And it was there that Pogba showed glimpses of his true quality on Wednesday evening as the influential midfielder produced an all-action showing in the middle of the park, completing ten successful dribbles, making four scoring opportunities for his team-mates while going close himself on five occasions.

He concluded: “All I can say is that I will follow the manager’s instructions to the letter. A goal is coming soon for me; in the meantime, I’ll continue to give everything for the team.”
