Chile made history last night by lifting their first ever Copa America title following a 4-1 penalty shootout victory over Argentina.

Featuring Arturo Vidal and Mauricio Isla in their starting line-up, the hosts made a lively start to proceedings but saw Vidal’s early volley on the turn parried clear by Sergio Romero.

Romero’s opposite number Claudio Bravo was also kept on his toes down the other end, stopping Sergio Aguero’s header with an instinctive save from point-blank range.

A cagey second half came to life with extra time looming and Argentina will felt they should have won it in stoppage time, only for substitute Gonzalo Higuain to turn Ezequiel Lavezzi’s low cross wide from a yard out.

In the penalty shootout, Matias Fernandez, Vidal, Charles Aranguiz and Alexis Sanchez all held their nerve to spark scenes of jubilation at the Estadio Nacional.
