On a wet and cold night on the road up against a physical and imposing home side, there are times when fighting spirit and determination alone are enough to produce important results.

Speaking immediately after his team’s gritty 1-0 victory over Lazio in Wednesday’s Coppa Italia quarter-final, Leonardo Bonucci was quick to pay tribute to the strength of character displayed by the Bianconeri on their way to a 12th consecutive domestic victory.

“We came up against a very good Lazio side tonight,” the defender began. “We wanted to reach the next round because winning the Coppa Italia is one of our objectives for the season.

“It was a tough, physical game. We would have liked to have extended our lead by more but the main thing is that we held out for the win and confirmed our place in the semis.”

For Leo, the victory on a ground at which they have historically struggled in the cup should be seen as a clear demonstration not only of the Old Lady’s winning mentality but also of the strength and depth of Massimiliano Allegri’s squad.

“Juventus play to win every game. We fight for each other and for every ball on the field and we owe to it ourselves to chase every title this season. To do so you not only a strong starting eleven but also good options from the substitutes’ bench.”

Safely into the semis, attention will now return to Serie A duties for Bonucci and co. who will look to put further pressure on league leaders Napoli when Roma come to town on Sunday evening.

“We have a massive game in the league next up and it’s up to us to ensure we win and keep the heat on Napoli. They are in great form but we are too.”
