After giving it their all, the Bianconere were bested by Fiorentina, who went on to lift the Italian Super Cup at the Stadio Alberto Picco.

Fiorentina came close to taking an early lead in the game after creating two good chances inside the opening 10 minutes, through Lilyana Kostova and then Lana Clelland. The Bianconere responded and Eniola Aluko fired a shot just past the Fiorentina post in the 16th minute, whilst Barbara Bonansea came close on corner kick 10 minutes later, with the opposition goalkeeper, Stephanie Ohrstrom reacting well.

Juventus Women ended the half with the best opportunity, as Bonansea’s cross into the box was headed onto the crossbar by striker, Cristina Girelli in the 43rd minute.

The Bianconere came out fighting in the second half, with Valentina Cernoia testing the impressive Ohrstrom with a stinging shot. However, Fiorentina took the decisive lead in the 68th minute when Clelland's centre was turned in by Ilaria Mauro. Juve attempted to react with Cecilia Salvai being denied during a scramble in the box. Despite their efforts it wasn't to be and Fiorentina went on to lift the 2018 Italian Super Cup.

Rita Guarino’s girls will now look to pick themselves back up when they travel to take on Roma in Serie A, on Saturday 20 October (16:00 CEST).

GUARINO REACTS

"Like all the matches at this magnitude, the first mistake that you make is punished. We haven't been good enough to take advantage of the chances that fell our way and the right belief was lacking. We're disappointed because this is a missed opportunity but we tried hard and created opportunities.

"We have to roll up our sleeves and we will continue to work as we have always done and with our heads held high, because the girls committed themselves by giving everything that they could."
