Los Colchoneros had suffered two of their three defeats in the league just days apart from each other- an occasion that hasn’t happened since November 2016. Naturally, it would be a feat they would were hoping to avoid just days before the first of the two Champions League clashes.

In Saturday’s Madrid derby, Casemiro struck first in the 16th minute of the game. Antoine Griezmann responded almost immediately with a goal nine minutes later, before Sergio Ramos converted from the spot before the break.

By that time, Los Blancos were dominating proceedings and they further extended their lead in the 74th minute when Gareth Bale converted off Luka Modric’s assist.

To make things worse for Atletico, Thomas was also sent in the 80th minute, proving no way for Atletico to come back against their rivals.

The loss means Atletico have now dropped to third on the LaLiga standings, with their next opponents set to be Rayo Vallecano on Sunday, 7 February.
