Scudetto 1960-61

Despite boasting the title of reigning champions, Juventus did not start the championship with the favourites tag as Milan and Inter both appeared to be better equipped to make an assault on the league trophy.

However, the Bianconeri managed to come out on top over the course of an up and down season in which they found themselves trailing Inter by five points after 15 games. A strong run of form in March and April was pivotal to their title challenge as the three losses in a row for the Nerazzurri coincided with a five-match winning streak.

By the start of May, the league was as good as won as Renato Cesarini’s men had established a five-point lead over Milan and Inter with just four games left to play. In the end, Juventus achieved back-to-back title success after beating off stiff competition from the two Milan sides, who both finished the season within five points of the top.

One of the unforgettable moments of the campaign arrived after the Scudetto trophy was already in the bag. The Bianconeri played their postponed fixture against Inter and ran out 9-1 winners at the Stadio Comunale, featuring six goals from Sivori.
