Juventus kicked off the fifth edition of the Coppa Italia by breezing past Aquila (4-1) in the first round and then edging out Alessandria (1-0) in a tense affair at the Stadio Comunale three weeks later. A spot in the last eight was secured when the Bianconeri put on a convincing performance against Atalanta, running out 6-0 winners thanks to Borel’s hat-trick and a Defilippis double.
Virginio Rosetta’s men were then pitted against Inter in the semi-finals and recorded a 2-0 victory thanks to a Tomasi goal and a converted penalty from Foni which helped set up a showpiece Turin derby finale.
Juve had one hand on the trophy following the first leg on their home patch as a Bellini double contributed to a 3-1 advantage going into the return match. One week later, Bladi III opened the scoring to set nerves jangling in the Bianconeri camp but Gabetto soon laid fears to rest with a brace and Juventus coasted to a first Coppa Italia triumph with a comfortable 5-2 aggregate win.
