Scudetto 1996-97

Despite finishing the previous season second behind Milan in Serie A, Juventus had won the European Cup in that campaign and continued to strengthen by adding Christian Vieri and Zinedine Zidane amongst a host of others to their squad.

The beginning of the season was not entirely to the high standards of past Juve teams: a poor run of early form included an unexpected defeat in Vicenza. However, the opportunity to recover came against Inter, and goals from Zidane and Vladimir Jugovic ensured that it was taken.

Roma were undone in the return fixture by the perfect understanding between Vieri and Nicola Amoruso, but it was the match against Milan on 6 April that confirmed that Juve were the best side that year. A truly dominant performance from start to finish at the San Siro saw the Bianconeri overcome the Rossoneri 6-1.

Everything was decided on the evening of 15 May: Juve played hosts to Piacenza, whilst title challengers Parma faced Milan. Juventus made hard work of their visitors initially but then dominated, whereas the team from Emilia Romagna were beaten by the Rossoneri. Lippi’s men had done it.

Never before had so many key players contributed to a title win: Del Piero, Vieri and Michele Padovano were joint top goalscorers with 8 goals each, followed by Jugovic (6), Zidane (5), and Ferrara (4).

Then again, the club’s centenary season couldn’t truly have ended in anything but the Scudetto title.
