Scudetto 2001-02

The summer of 2001 saw many arrivals, first amongst which was the return of Marcello Lippi, the man who had won everything with Juve between 1994 and 1998. Gianluigi Buffon, Lilian Thuram, Pavel Nedved and Marcelo Salas all joined the squad.

Venezia were swept aside by the Bianconeri on the opening day of the season, with two goals each from Alessandro Del Piero and David Trezeguet in a 4-0 victory. They then reached the same scoreline seven days later in Bergamo.

Lippi’s men were in great form, but began to lose their momentum slightly. Gabriel Batistuta’s Roma side stole all three points at the Delle Alpi, and Torino were allowed to fight back from 3-0 down to clinch a draw in the derby soon afterwards.

The Bianconeri overcame this frustrating spell when Pavel Nedved began to fire on all cylinders, going on to record comprehensive victories against Brescia (4-0) and Lecce (3-0).

But their form dipped again, and it would now be the final matchday that would decide the team to be crowned Scudetto champions.

In a thrilling finale, the Bianconeri did all they could by securing victory against Udinese, and faced a nervous wait for the result of Inter vs. Lazio. Fortunately, luck was with them on that fateful day and Inter folded in Rome.

Juventus had won the title in the historic 100th Serie A championship, a moment of great joy for the players and all the fans.
