Jesse Carver, the coach who restored the Bianconeri to Scudetto glory 15 years after the Quinquennio period, was born on this day in 1911.

The Englishman’s arrival coincided with shifting circumstances in the Italian game, following the Superga air disaster that saw 18 players of the Grande Torino team tragically killed on 4 May 1949.

With Danes Carl Praest and John Hansen joining Giampiero Boniperti as part of a dynamic attacking force, early wins over Fiorentina, Lazio, Bari, Milan and Triestina saw Juventus charge to the top of the table, a position they refused to relinquish until their hands were firmly on the club’s eighth Scudetto trophy.

It wasn’t all plain sailing, though, as a 7-1 home defeat by Milan in February, during which Carlo Parola was given his marching orders, reminded the Bianconeri that there was still work to be done.

A succession of high scoring triumphs enabled Carver’s men to swiftly silence their critics and see off the challenge of nearest chasers Milan with four games to spare.

Carver was unable to repeat his success the following season, leading to his dismissal in the summer of 1951, but will always be held in high regard by Juventus supporters and all those who worked with him.

The Liverpool-born coach would go on to manage six other Italian clubs, including Torino and Roma, before retiring back in his homeland.

He passed away in 2003, the same year as Giovanni Agnelli, whose decision it was to entrust the Englishman with restoring Juventus to glory.
