While Juventus were beginning their journey south to Sicily for tomorrow’s match at the Stadio Renzo Barbera, Palermo coach Roberto De Zerbi was sitting down to address the media and offer the Rosanero perspective on proceedings this afternoon.
De Zerbi, preparing to face the Old Lady for the first time as a manager, predicts a tough challenge for his team against “by far the best outfit in the league” but one that is not beyond them if they play “with the right spirit and togetherness.”
The 37-year-old had this to say of Saturday’s encounter:
“I haven’t got much experience of preparing for big matches like this, but a fundamental requirement is that you fight as a team. We’ll have to keep things tight in defence if we are to get anything from the game. However you look at it, Juventus are the best side in the league.
“We won’t be just rolling over, without a desire to win there’s no point turning up. I’m looking forward to relishing the challenge as much as I did last season.
“Juve are massive favourites; they made some excellent reinforcements over the summer. As for us, I’m pleased with the way the players have picked up my methods and they will need to play a perfect match tomorrow with the right mentality.
“With stars like Higuain on the field, at times there isn’t a magic formula for stopping them, all you can do is stand together and fight for every ball. We want to go out and play our own game with the belief that we can cause an upset: Palermo have done it before and we have it in us to do it again.”
