Even the most passionate Bianconeri fans would be hard pushed to remember the last encounter between Juventus and Lechia Gdansk. The only previous meeting between the two teams came in 1983 in the first round of the European Cup Winners’ Cup.

In the first round tie at Turin’s Stadio Comunale on 14 September 1983, goals from Paolo Rossi, Michel Platini (two) and Domenico Penzo (four) tied up a 7-0 home win in the first leg.

The opening effort had a touch of fortune about it as the Lechia keeper could only spill a looping right wing cross into the path of Platini who poked home from close range.

The lead was doubled five minutes later as Cabrini’s centre found Penzo at the back post to volley home for his first of four on the night.

Platini then had his second and the pick of the bunch on the half hour mark, plucking Paolo Rossi’s flighted through ball out of the air with his chest before stroking home to make it 3-0.

Three more goals followed for Penzo before Rossi added a well-earned late seventh to make amends for a missed penalty early in the second half.

In the return leg two weeks later, the Poles ran the Bianconeri close as goals from Kowalczyk and Kruszczynski had given Lechia a 2-1 lead in front of a sell-out and passionate home support. Yet Juve replied quickly as Polish hero Boniek and then Tavola put the finishing touches on a 3-2 win on the night and a 10-2 triumph on aggregate.

Having overcome the Poles in September, the Bianconeri went on to knock out Paris Saint-Germain, FC Haka and Manchester United on their way to lifting the European Cup Winners’ Cup, beating Porto 2-1 in the final in Basel.
