Gianluigi Buffon insists Juventus must keep improving after they secured a hard-fought 1-0 win over Lyon on Tuesday night despite playing much of the second half with ten men.

“We still need to get better,” said the Juve captain after the final whistle. “Our performance tonight, especially when it was 11 versus 11, is not going to be enough for us to go all the way.

“We showed we could dig in and take responsibility, but we have plenty of room for improvement and we need to use the time ahead of us to grow as a team.”

The Italian produced a quintessential Buffon performance in France, denying Alexandre Lacazette from the penalty spot in the first half before thwarting Lyon time and again as the match wore on, yet the keeper was quick to play down his contribution.

“I didn’t celebrate any of the saves because I wanted to conserve my energy and stay focused. There was still a long way to go and when you’re down to ten men you know there’s always a chance you can end up losing.”

Buffon went on to praise the way Juve neutralised Lyon as an attacking force.

“Lyon have a lot of quality up top but we responded by keeping things really tight when we were a man light. The win goes a long way towards securing qualification from the group.”
